Reflective Paper
Submitted to Dr. Dianne Oberg for LIS 600
Spring 1998

I have selected for electronic publication my paper The Tangled Web We Weave: Intellectual Property and the World Wide Web which I wrote during the Winter 1997 term for LIS 582: Intellectual Property and the New Technologies. This course, which was team taught by Professors Hope Olson of SLIS and Lillian McPherson of the Faculty of Law, surveyed many aspects of intellectual property that are affected by the Internet. To further explore this topic I focused my paper on the impact that the World Wide Web is having on copyright legislation.

Copyright has always been a concern for libraries. This concern has become more pronounced as libraries become major players in electronic publishing. It is paramount that libraries are aware of copyright issues while developing web sites and in-house publications. This paper, which discusses intellectual property issues that should be considered when publishing information on the World Wide Web, serves as a starting point to exploring web copyright. The References link to sites that provide further information on this topic.

My exploration of intellectual property within an electronic medium is reflective of my academic pursuits at SLIS. My programme has focused on technology based courses including Networking, Internet Communications, Management of Information Technology, Electronic Reference, Advanced Automation, and Intellectual Property and the New Technologies.

As graduation draws near, my career goals have become more defined, revolving around library automation and reference work. Specifically, I am interested in the Internet as a reference tool, and I have an interest in developing web sites for libraries. Thus far, I have developed a web site for the Hinton Municipal Library for EdPy 597: Communicating, Accessing, and Providing Information. While developing this web site, I encountered many of the copyright issues that I discuss within this paper, indicating the prevalence of copyright issues in Internet publishing.
